Observation Narrative
Spartina cynosuroides in the vicinity of transect #5 is apparently restricted to a narrow band. Plot was placed on the upstream side because this vegetation type, which occupies a zone between Pontederia cordata and Eleocharis quadrangulata (plot MATR125) on the riverward side and shrub-scrub vegetation (plot MATR127) on the landward side, quickly grades into woody vegetation downstream and to the marsh interior. In the upstream and landward direction (see photo 24) Spartina is replaced by apparently more diverse vegetation; Peltandra virginica and Pontederia occur along a permanent tidal creek, and Zizania aquatica occupies a zone adjacent to tidal hardwood swamp forest. Spartina within the plot may be less dense than is characteristic elsewhere, and higher light levels and reduced competition may facilitate higher species richness.
